Summer holidays always remind me how much more I flourish when I have a little structure containing my energy and focus. Otherwise, I am like jello out of a container on a hot countertop. Eventually, I just melt and ooze and become fairly useless. That said, we all need a few weeks to unplug and reset. I came back to work inspired and energized for the projects and clients who are on my schedule. That’s good for me and good for them!
Let’s Talk Structure!
A few years back I created a planner (LIFEMAP INFINITY PLANNER) for my clients because what I was finding was that they would learn new tools and strategies and then they would not INTEGRATE them into their daily lives. They forgot. They were overwhelmed and couldn’t think about where to begin. They didn’t think about it because it wasn’t top of mind in the chaos of life. I am sure you know the feeling. The planner was designed to get them to be intentional about everything that went into their LIFEMAP from planned holidays to time for themselves. If it was in their planner, it was a promise they made to themselves. I also taught LIFEMAP Workshops that were sold out and people loved them.
Yesterday, I was on the phone with my daughter’s neurologist and she reminded me that STRUCTURE and ROUTINE will help set her up for more successful days, weeks, months, and years. I tell my clients who struggle with chronic illness and buck having any structure “that it is in a structure that you will find freedom.” For example, if a structure can keep you stable and feeling well, you are more likely to be able to make plans and keep them. If you do not have structure (specifically a wellness routine), then you are more likely to have breakthrough periods of not feeling well. So with the lack of structure, you may make plans but not be able to keep many of them because you have an episode that knocks you back. Then, you feel depressed because you are always too unwell to do as you dream of doing! Make sense?
Generally speaking, when we are living our day-to-day lives, we all have some sort of structure. It may be fairly lax but it is there. BUT IS IT INTENTIONAL? Is it serving your dreams? Does your day-to-day routine allow you to do things each day to take you closer to where you want to go? Or, do you spend so much time putting out fires that the true priorities get pushed to the wayside?
An example of this may be my intention of wanting to get strong, fit, and flexible again. If I wait until the end of the day when everyone else has had their needs met, there will be no progress made in this area. BUT, if I schedule in a morning routine that has me getting up and drinking a glass of water, stretching, doing cardio/weights, enjoying my sacred cup of coffee while I journal – I feed my spirit and soul FIRST. I have INTENTIONALLY designed this morning routine to take me where I want to go (fix, flex and fab before I turn 50!) Plus, I start every day on my terms! I am already winning! It feels so amazing.
